Julie Doiron: embracing the past
February 9th, 2010 | Published in Headliners | 1 Comment
Julie Doiron got her start in the music biz in the early 1990s with the band Eric’s Trip. Although the band was from Moncton, they are recognized as leaders in the establishment of Halifax as the “Seattle North” of the grunge era, and they were the first of several Canadian bands signed by the legendary Seattle label Sub Pop Records.
Julie started her solo career after Eric’s Trip broke apart in 1996, initially under the name “Broken Girl.” Hurt from the dissolution of the band—which was partly related to her earlier romantic breakup with band mate Rick White—Doiron tried to separate herself from the band: Her name was different and her music was as different as possible from the grunge rock of her old group.

But time heals all wounds. Eric’s Trip has played occasional reunion shows since 2001. Julie and Rick have been working together again, and on her latest record, 2009′s I can wonder what you did with your day, she rocks louder than anything she’s done since Eric’s Trip disbanded. And now, she says, she doesn’t mind being introduced as “Julie Doiron, from Eric’s Trip.”
Without Eric’s Trip … I probably wouldn’t be doing music as a career … I wouldn’t have had the guts or the courage to do it.
Doiron now boasts eight solo records plus a collection of EPs, 45s, collaborations and guest appearances, not to mention a Juno.
Perhaps one of her less-known accomplishments is The Longest Winter, her book of photography published in 1999. Doiron studied photography in university and planned a career as a photographer before Eric’s Trip came along.
In this interview, Julie talks about her photography, reconciling herself with the “of Eric’s Trip” handle, life in Sackville, N.B., and the question she most hates to answer.
