What’s new and exciting on the Canadian music scene, in easily digested morsels:
- Peaches has been inducted as an honorary member of the Harvard Lampoon. According to the Harvard blog Noice, “decked out as a glammed up Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, [Peaches] rocked out with karaoke in front of the Harvard Lampoon” Dec. 7, and was later inducted in a private ceremony. Peaches’ appearance was the highlight of the publication’s Annual Canadian Synthpunk/Glam Rock Awards Dinner.
Billboard Magazine has dubbed Canadian pulp-rockers Nickelback the Band of the Decade. The band outsold all other bands in the unnameable decade that spanned 2000 through 2009. In unrelated news, Billboard itself was sold last week.- Meanwhile, Nickelback was also voted the Worst Band in the World by readers of the U.K. music rag Word Magazine.
- The Guthries, The Acorn, and Octoberman are among the bands including covers on a Sloan tribute album released in late November. Take It In: A Tribute to Sloan includes 39 tracks on two discs. A bonus Murderecords tribute EP is also available. Sloan just released an EP of their own. Hit & Run came out November 23.
While we’re talking about Sloan, the Maritime faves were recognized for their lifetime of achievements with the Lifetime Achievement award at the 2009 Bucky Awards. Dan Mangan (right, interview) was the big winner at CBC Radio3′s prize party. His song “Robots” won both Best Song and Best Vocals. Other winners included Mother Mother (interview), Joel Plaskett, and Hannah Georgas.- More than 3 million people took in Celine Dion‘s “Taking Chances World Tour” in 2008/09. Now that it’s over, if you’re wondering if your heart will go on, fear not: your a second chance (of sorts) is coming. A movie/documentary Celine: Through The Eyes Of The World is coming to the big screen in early 2010, with concert footage and behind-the-scenes vignettes as she circumnavigates the globe with her entourage and family.
